For a Veteran's non–service-connected death, the VA provides a burial and funeral allowance of up to $1,002, plus up to $1,002 toward a plot — about $2,000 in total. For a service-connected death, the burial allowance is up to $2,000.
Meanwhile, the median cost of a funeral with viewing and burial in the U.S. is about $8,300 — closer to $10,000 once a vault is included, and that figure does not yet count the cemetery plot itself.
For many families, that leaves a gap of several thousand dollars. A final expense life insurance policy is designed to help cover that gap, so the cost doesn't fall to a spouse or children.
